Glendale Watermill

Sadly, the roof has finally caved in on the watermill. It is not locked and there are no signs warning visitors that it is unsafe to enter, so perhaps it would be sensible for any holiday cottage owners to warn visitors via their information packs. Presumably, in these litigious times, the Glendale Estate would be held liable if any visitors were to injure themselves within the building.
How tragic that this important building, a unique part of the history & heritage of the people of Glendale has been allowed to collapse into this state.

Ice Causing Travel Problems

The gritter that usually comes around Glendale before 7am developed a fault this morning and had to return to Portree for a replacement blade. This left the road ungritted for the morning commute and it was covered in sheet ice from Lephin, all the way up the hill to the brae. A few 4x4s made it through but I skidded into the quarry entrance at Fasach and got stuck. Alison made it to the church at Fasach and gave up. Others turned back, when they saw how bad it was. The gritter finally made it to Glendale between 10:30am and 11am.

Alison has phoned TEC Services to ask why there are no piles of grit being left along the road here, as in times like this they could literally be a life saver. We both had spades in the boot for spreading the grit but there wasn't any there.

Borrodale School

A rumour has been circulating the glen that Highland Council were planning to convert Borrodale School into local authority housing for problem families from other parts of Scotland. I believe that the council are actually proposing that the school site be used to provide low-cost/shared-equity housing and that the Glendale Estate committee would agree to this on the proviso that the housing is allocated to local families from within Glendale.

Borrodale School

Public meeting on the future of Borrodale School
Wednesday 9th December at 7:30pm
At the Glendale Hall

The Glendale Trust invites the community of Glendale to meet and discuss the future of Borrodale School where we will present our proposal to establish a full-time heritage and cultural centre at the school.

Press Release From The Glendale Trust

For immediate publication, Tuesday 1st December 2009

The Glendale Trust applies to Highland Council to lease Borrodale School to establish a permanent Heritage and Cultural Centre for Glendale
The Glendale Trust has today written to Highland Council requesting that the mothballed Borrodale School be leased to The Glendale Trust to establish a permanent Heritage and Cultural Centre.
In the letter to Highland Council, Glendale Trust chairman Ian Blackford states:
“I write on behalf of The Glendale Trust to formally request that the Education Culture & Sport Committee of Highland Council consider our proposal to lease Borrodale School at its meeting in January 2010 as part of its deliberations on the future of the school.
Whilst leasing is our preferred option as it would retain ownership of the buildings in the hands of the council whilst sustaining the use of the building for educational and cultural use within Glendale, we would be prepared to consider outright purchase on behalf of the community.
In the interim we would also like to request that until a decision is taken on the future of the school whether the Trust can have access to the buildings to mount exhibitions and events in 2010. The Highland Council have been extremely helpful in allowing us to host an exhibition in 2009 and continued access would allow the trust to develop the heritage theme and demonstrate that we have robust plans to that will generate sustained demand for such a facility. This will of course make sure the buildings are put to good practical use in the meantime.
We attach to this letter our business plan for a heritage and cultural centre which would be an important educational and social resource for Glendale as well as high quality tourist attraction. This proposal would allow the school to continue to serve as an educational centre for Glendale as well as securing employment opportunities for the area.”
Notes for editors
The Glendale Trust will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday 9th December at 19:30 at the Glendale Hall to present the plan for a heritage and cultural centre to the community of Glendale to which all are welcome to attend.
The Glendale Trust is seeking to raise £250,000 in funding to develop this facility in Glendale. Copies of the business plan are attached to this press release.

For further information please contact Ian Blackford on 01470 511218 or e-mail ian@firstseer.com

NOTE : I've confirmed with Trust and the Business Plan is not being released until after the public meeting next week, but Ian has promised us a copy then - Andy.

An Strupag

Glen Stores (aka An Strupag) is now being advertised on the Isle of Skye Estate Agency web-site for offers over £85,000. From the particulars, it seems that Kirsty is retaining the land behind the building, as only 1 metre of land around the rear of the building is included in the lot. This is a real shame, as it will seriously restrict the potential of the property by preventing the building from being extended to improve the kitchen/toilet facilities.

Hallowe'en at the Hall

There will be a Hallowe'en Family Ceilidh Supper at the Community Hall on Saturday 31st October.  Traditional hallowe'en games for children and 'big kids' too (bring costume and lanterns) 6pm. Supper at 7pm - Bangers (superior) and Mash, peas and onion gravy. Apple crumble, Tea or Coffee. BYOB.  Price now reduced to: £5 adults, kids free. Booking essential by Thursday 29th. Ring Clare on 01470 511753.

The parents with children felt that the cost of the Hallowe'en do was too much for them. The hall association held a meeting at which it was decided to reduce it to £5 for adults, children free. The committee think the priority is to get people together for a social event more than a fund raiser. - Clare Gray

Any profit to Hall funds.

Swam some of the Minch

Sadly, Stephen Brass's attempt to be the first person to swim the Minch was abandoned after two hours, when the swimmer got cramp. Unfortunately, word didn't reach the handful of people waiting at Meanish Pier until mid-afternoon, by which time someone had pressure washed the pier steps and a journalist had driven all the way from Inverness to watch the event.

Many thanks to the kindly journalist for coming back to tell us the news, after going to 'make a few calls'. Otherwise we would have been watching the sea all afternoon, waiting for the swimmer to arrive.

Community Council Meeting

This email from Joy Talbot, summarising the meeting with Highland Council on Monday, has been doing the rounds in Glendale but strangely nobody thought to forward it on to me for the web-site, so apologies for the delay in posting this.

The meeting took place attended by about 10 residents.

Summary:

  1. If we want a council, at least 20 people must write in to express their wish to see the council re-instated.  A pro forma letter was handed out - copy attached.
  2. A minimum of nine people must be willing to serve on the council.  If more than 9 are willing - elections will be held.

Perhaps you could pass the letter around and hopefully we will find 20 people who want a council, finding the councillors may be more difficult

Regards

Joy Talbot

Power Cuts Again

"Reinstate Our Bus" Campaign

This information has kindly been passed on by John Devine:

Following the withdrawal of the bus service outside the school term times, Effie Ross at Fasach has been conducting correspondence with the local councillor in an effort to have the service reinstated - so far unsuccessfully I'm afraid. We also placed a petition at the post office to garner local support for this essential service - not just for locals, but for tourists who wish to visit the area as well - especially important during the summer months.

Essentially its a Catch 22 situation - the lack of a bus service means it is essential to own or have access to a car, resulting in even less use of the service, leading to politicians deciding to cut the service because of the perceived lack of use...QED. The excuse the council gave to Effie for axing the service was that only one person per day was using it - there was no consultation with anyone from Glendale/Milovaig for this decision, but the absence of a Community Council didn't help matters.

Naturally we disagreed with the decision and pointed out that it directly contradicted the Scottish Parliament's commitment to maintaining and developing public transport in rural areas. The issue was highlighted by Shirley Spear in an article in the Sunday Herald last year.

I don't have a car and travelling to Glendale outwith school term times has resulted in either expensive taxi fares - £10.00 from Dunvegan or a long walk with luggage - yes, I have done it a few times. I can get a bus from Glasgow to Portree for £6.00 single, but then pay a further £15.00 to get to Glendale from Portree...

Anyway we hope to keep pressing the council on this matter.

Recycling Point Re-Sited Again

After their voyage down the burn during the last storm, the Bottle Banks have now been moved into the playground at Borrodale School. Quite how the lorry is going to get in to take them away again, when they need emptying, is anyone's guess [Posted 22/01/2009].

The January Storm of 2009

Glendale was battered again by severe gales on Saturday evening, with Dunvegan Weather Station (http://www.skyeweather.co.uk) clocking their record gust of 84.2 mph.
The trail of destruction included Bob & Anna Cleland's caravan being tossed into their garden, roof tiles dislodged at Neil & Anne Paterson's & Lif Pederson's houses on the top road in Lower Milovaig, the Community Recycling Point bottle banks blown into the burn at Borrodale, a portakabin tipped up at Colbost, an old boat turned over at Meanish Pier and mature willow trees uprooted at the Hampsons' in Lower Milovaig. The power was off for almost three hours on Saturday evening, between 7 and 11pm, and again for another hour on Sunday lunchtime [Posted 19/01/2009].

Community Recycling Point Moved

The Community Recycling Point was moved to the layby opposite Borrodale School last Thursday, at the request of the Glendale Hall Committee. [Posted 19/01/2009].
