Hogmanay Bonfire & Barbecue
The Glendale Trust are organising a Hogmanay Bash at Meanish Pier with a bonfire. Bring a bottle. There seems to be a little confusion over the catering arrangements, as the newletter says: barbecue on a 'bring your own steak' basis but flyers in the village say 'snacks available'. There is no confusion over the bonfire, though, as it has already been built and largely features the combustible parts of the wreckage of the two caravans that were destroyed in the recent gales! For more details phone Anne Blackford on (01470) 511218. [First Posted 26/12/2008, re-posted 30/12/2008].

Glendale Battered By High Winds
The winds that battered Glendale on Friday left a trail of destruction in Milovaig, with many mature trees uprooted.
The static caravan at the road-side on Mary Ann's croft in Lower Milovaig was smashed to pieces. Its shattered remains and contents were strewn all the way to the shore. Reputedly, it had stood there for over 30 years.
A touring caravan that had been left untethered at Meanish Pier was dashed against the railings on the Pier and also smashed to pieces, with just the chassis remaining in tact. The old portaloo at the pier was also blown over and destroyed but luckily the boats appear to have escaped unscathed. The blue recycling bins that were delivered last week have been blown all over the place. [Posted 20/12/2008]
Kerb-side Recycling Arrives in Glendale
Every house in Glendale had a blue, recycling wheelie bin delivered on December 13th, which can be used to recycle your paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles. Glass still needs to be taken to the Community Hall bottle-bank.
Before we all get carried away filling them, though, it is worth noting that the first collection isn't until the end of February 2009, so we still need to use the recycling facility at the Community Hall for a little while longer. The blue bins will be emptied every 4 weeks. Presumably, this will also mean that our normal refuse collection will be reduced to fortnightly at some stage.
Holiday cottage owners might like to update the information packs in their properties to encourage their guests to recyle their waste whilst visiting the island. [Posted 13/12/2008].

Broadband Revolution In Glendale
Few have noticed that, over the Summer, BT have upgraded our broadband service in Glendale and lifted us out of the digital doldrums! Even at the end of the line in Milovaig we are now consistently achieving download speeds of 1.8Mbps (over 30 times faster than dial-up), although upload speeds remain at a paltry 350Kbps.
